Unlike many other physical disorders, which tend to affect a localized part of the body, mental illness tends to impact the entire being of a person. The way an individual moves, interacts with others, functions and even their physical appearance can all be affected by the slightest of alterations within the brain and nervous system.

A person struggling with the effects of a mental illness may show certain quirks in their behavior, or partial impairment of their physical movements. The most significant impacts, though, can come in communication.

For individuals considering careers in speech pathology, it is important to understand how altered brain chemistry or physical damage in certain parts of the brain can partially or fully impair speech. This will impact the types of treatment that are prescribed by medical professionals.

For people suffering from mental illness, it is crucial to seek professional, medical and therapeutic help if you experience a loss or alteration of speech. It is also important to understand some of the ways mental illness can impact communication skills.

Slurred or incoherent speech: This can often occur at the onset of illness. As the untreated condition worsens, slurring increases and may reach the point where communicating is impossible.

Different social skills: It is very common for people suffering from mental disease to develop inappropriate or abnormal social skills. These can manifest themselves through loud or inappropriate speech; remarks that are disjointed from the rest of the conversation; and an inability to understand the normal social cues from the people around them.

These are just a few indications of possible mental disease. Disorders of the brain can be tricky to diagnose and treat, making it very important to stick with the treatment plan your doctor prescribes.

It is sad when you find out someone in your family has a mental illness, whether it is a relative or your own child. Mental illnesses can appear at any stage of life, and some even have them from birth. There are many different types of mental illnesses. Some of the most common types are Down syndrome and schizophrenia, however, a mental illness can be as simple as a learning impairment or disability. No matter what the mental illness, if someone in your family has one, you might be responsible for his or her care.

If someone with a mental illness has been entrusted in your care, it can make your life very stressful. Whether you are responsible for their meals, taking them places, or just checking in on them every once in a while, you have to take time out of your busy day to make sure their needs are met. There are support groups that can help you understand mental illnesses better and teach you how to cope and help the best.

Depending on the mental illness, you may also be responsible for helping in other ways. For instance, people with mental illness might need help preparing meals or managing their money. With the help of a doctor, you can better determine the role you’ll have to play.

It is a big responsibility to care for someone with a disability. You are doing a very good thing if you take on this responsibility. Plus, you can ensure that your loved one gets the help he or she needs.

Global Training: Pet Insurance & A Global Staff

Have pet insurance questions? You’re not alone. When training a global health workforce, it’s essential these and many other questions be answered along the way. Pet insurance is becoming a part of the healthcare discussion and with the rising medical costs across the board, it’s really no surprise. No one wants to pay more than they have to, for anything, really. By asking the right questions, you won’t have to pay for anything more than you actually need, and that Fido needs.

With so many people in the world denied access to even basic healthcare, it is essential to train a global health workforce in an attempt to redress the balance.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are fifty seven countries in the world facing a severe crisis in terms of numbers health workforce. They also estimate that over 4 million (yes, million) extra health workers are needed to fill that gap. Not surprisingly, most of these countries are located in Africa and Asia. Figures show that whilst only 14% of the world’s population lives in the Americas, they are home to 42% of the world’s healthcare workers and more than 50% of the global expenditure on healthcare. In contrast to this, sub-Saharan Africa is home to 11% of the world’s population, but has only 3% of the healthcare workers and less than 1% of the expenditure.

On the other hand, the increasing number and age of the population in US is partly to blame for a massive deficit in the number of healthcare workers actually needed to provide adequate healthcare, and there is a great difference in the number of places in medical schools to train the doctors and other healthcare professionals of the future, and the number of healthcare workers needed.

Health Education Worldwide

The International Health and Medical Education Center (IHMEC) has been instrumental in initiating policies to regulate an international medical education policy to ensure that equal standards of health education can be reached in different medical schools all over the world. This has facilitated in the training of more healthcare workers, who are adequately trained to provide health care on a global scale. Opening up a world of possibilities for students to train in many different countries of the world has helped to globalize the healthcare profession. Having a workforce which is trained to cope with the many multicultural differences around the world can only be beneficial to the healthcare of all, and hopefully with more new initiatives it will be possible to ensure that all people have access to adequate healthcare, wherever they may live. We live in hope that some day the dream will become a reality.

Many people don’t realized that alcoholism is a serious disease. Thism along with addictions to other drugs can cause family problems and can even lead to death. When a person takes the step to get help for their addiction, it is a very big step.

There are three main forms of rehabilitation that can help someone with an addiction, no matter the level or whether it is alcohol or drug related.

Figuring out and deciding on the type of rehab facility is best for you or someone you love can be a confusing and difficult decision. Each of the following forms of rehab are very different, so when making your decision, it’s best to do find out as much as possible about each option.

Detox: Nearly all of these treatments will begin here and last up to a month, depending on the severity of addiction. Throughout this stage, the body will start to adjust to not having the chemical in it. Medical detoxification may be an option, in which the patient will be set up with an IV to help lessen withdrawal symptoms.

Outpatient: In this treatment, the patient gets treated every day and must participate in group and/or individual therapy sessions along with sobriety meetings in order to stay on track. This treatment takes up most of a day to keep the patient focused on staying clean.

Inpatient: This will also involve the detox stage. The patient will stay in a facility and will be monitored constantly. The patient will attend therapy sessions and group meetings. Inpatient treatment lasts up to eight months and is always followed by a short outpatient treatment program.

Image via Wikipedia

Music has been demonstrated to have lots of different mental health benefits, including the ability to improve memory, reduce stress, and minimize anxiety. Music therapy can also help patients who are in rehabilitation for their serious brain injuries.

Listening to music has a number of effects on the brain as demonstrated by brain imaging techniques. Classical music has the best results, but any type of music increases brain activity when compared to silence or talking. Those who have suffered brain injuries have gone on to note that music helped them in their recovery. When a traumatic brain injury leaves someone unable to effectively communicate or understand speech, that person is still often able to remember or play music.

Music therapy often requires the help of someone with a Ph.D in music therapy, and some families don’t even try music therapy for fear of the cost. However, patients who go to a Los Angeles brain injury attorney for assistance in their cases can often get necessary therapy paid for by the party responsible for the injury.

Not only can music help brain injury patients retrieve memories and communicate with others, it can also keep their spirits buoyant as they move towards rehabilitation. Those who suffer serious injuries may slip into a depressive or apathetic state, which leaves them unable to fully immerse themselves in treatment. Music is often used to keep patients’ spirits up, which keeps them motivated to work at their therapy. Music is often linked to quicker rehabilitation for brain injuries.

Many people, adults and kids alike, may be good at working under pressure, but sometimes, we all need to get away from the hustle of daily work and school.

We call these “Mental health days,” and the are very important.

When taking one of these days, many people ust call in sick. Sometimes, though, we really feel that way. Anxiety attacks happen to many people and they cause the heart to race or pound unusually hard. Headaches are also a symptom, so when taking a mental health day, you may actually believe you’re sick.

Anxiety and panic attacks are one of the most important signs to watch out for, because they are tell-tale signs that you need a mental health day. Depression and lack of interest in things that were once enjoyable are a couple other important signs. Stress is something all of us deal with on a daily basis, and if it’s left to eat away at us, we could end up in a hospital.

Mental health days can be whatever you want them to be. The one hardened rule is that you keep work and school out of them. Avoid anything you believe causes you stress. If lying in bed all day listening to music is what you want to do, then do it. If you want to visit a local museum, go right ahead. Just be sure that you avoid anything stressful.

Taking a day out for relaxation will improve your mood, concentration, and energy levels. We all need to relax once and a while, so if you’re feeling beat down, take a mental health day. Your body will thank you for it.

Anxiety attacks are fairly common and many people will have them and think little of it. These attacks can signal other possible mental health issues, though, so be sure to pay attention when you suffer from anxiety attacks.

What causes anxiety attacks?

In most cases, it’s fear. The body knows fear and will react to it in different ways. In many cases, symptoms include rapid heartbeat/palpitations, headaches, shortness of breath, and nausea. Some people experience such serious attacks that they will cry.The fear can be wrk or school related, but really, anything can trigger it.

What are other symptoms?

People suffering anxiety attacks can experience a multitude of different symptoms. Some of these are:

Chills/hot flashes

Shaking/twitching/trembling

stomach/digestion issues

difficulty sleeping/irregular sleeping patterns

tingling or numbness in the arms and legs

headaches (some so severe they cause vomiting)

body tension/pain

chest pains (of varying degrees)

feelings of nervousness (“butterflies”)

Anxiety attacks can be incapacitating. In some cases, people won’t leave home, withdraw from family and friends, and in some of the more severe cases, end up in hospitals.

How do I treat an anxiety attack?

The first and most important step is to visit your doctor. Discuss your symptoms and anything else you’ve noticed as a result of those symptoms. In most cases, doctors will prescribe an anti-anxiety medication to help with symptoms. it is important to try to learn what is causing your attacks and then try to avoid those situations, people, etc. For some people, that is harder said than done, in which case, medication may be the best alternative.

Your loved one has an addiction and you know he or she needs help. Often, getting help at home or through local addiction programs is not enough. Many people can overcome addiction if they get help from a professional organization, such as a rehab center. The good news is that Canada has numerous options worth exploring.

Finding a Trusted Provider

A quick search on Canada 411 will reveal a large number of professionals you can consider working with for addiction help. The following are a few of the addiction rehab centers worth considering:

A Home Away is a facility in Okanagan Valley of British Columbia. It is a luxury drug rehab center that features holistic therapy treatments.

Aurora Centre is another facility; this one is dedicated to serving just women’s needs. This addiction treatment center is in Vancouver at the British Columbia Women’s Hospital and Health Centre.

Aventa is a more mainstream option in rehab centers. This facility focuses on both drug and alcohol rehabilitation services for both men and women. It uses the 12-step program treatment processes. It is located in Calgary.

If you need a specialized treatment center or want the facility to offer very specific features, do a quick search online for local providers. Take a few minutes to compare several facilities. Find out the facility’s success rate and availability. You may want to schedule an initial interview without your loved one to determine if the facility can offer help for him or her. Some offer intervention services which can help you to get your loved one to agree to the program. Your loved one needs help; these centers can give it.

What is medical education? Medical education differs around the world, although all medical schools strive to work towards the same standard of qualifications.

Medical education is basically any education which leads to or is for the purpose of becoming a medical practitioner, either in the initial training of becoming say, a doctor, or any additional training taken afterwards.

There are some diverse and alternate routes into the medical profession, which vary around the world, but well take a look at one of the most general courses of medical education often followed by doctors and other medical staff in the US.

Entry Level Education

Medical schools in the US generally require you to have some former University education, so these courses are known as second entry degrees. Competition is pretty fierce for entry to medical schools in the US, as there are nowhere near enough places available for the number of potential candidates. Some figures quote that in 2006 there were over 400,000 applicants for only 14,000 vacant positions, so they really can afford to choose the cream of the crop.

Post Graduate Education

After the entry level training is completed, it is usual for newly graduated doctors to undertake a period of time during supervised practice, before they are granted full registration. This one year period is sometimes referred to as provisional registration, residency, or more often internship.

It is at this point that many opt for further training specific to their chosen field of medicine. In some cases this can be started following immediate completion of the entry level training, but often it is necessary for junior doctors to follow general training for a period of time before specialized training can begin.

Online Medical Education

The internet is playing an increased role in continued medical education, with many possibilities for continuing medical education online, also known as distance learning. This has opened up extra training from medical schools around the world, for junior doctors who are already practicing in a different location. There has been lots of research conducted about online medical education including the following particular areas:

The varying roles of the participants (teacher, student etc)

Generation of content

Practical applications in relation to virtual patients

Assessment

Distance learning

Legal and ethical issues

Accessibility

Economics

Standards and specifications

International Medical Education

Globalization of the medical profession has made it increasingly important to create a basic standard for international medical education. This has been created by IHMEC (International Health and Medical Education Center) and ensures that medical students from around the world reach the necessary standards of expertise to be employed globally. This is of increasing importance, as places like US which simply does not have the medical school places available to train enough doctors to fill its own requirements, can employ medical staff from other places around the world. It has also opened up medical education possibilities for students to train in foreign countries and know that they will be gaining the necessary qualifications for worldwide employment.

Alcohol and drug rehabilitation can be very expensive. In a recent survey it was estimated that the average cost of a 30 day stay at a drug or alcohol rehabilitation center can cost anywhere from $5000-$10,000 in an average hospital themed center. With such a huge amount of money on the line many people rely upon their health insurance to cover the cost of the rehab stay but there are certain terms and restrictions that come with insurance companies and having them cover your rehab visit.

Here’s a look at some of the limitations that health insurance companies put on covering rehabilitation stays.

Doctor Recommended

Many insurance companies require that the drug and alcohol rehabilitation the recommended by a doctor. This can delay treatment as you will have to be seen by a doctor in order to get a recommendation and time is of the essence when it comes to entering a drug or alcohol rehabilitation center.

Limits on the Stay

Some insurance companies will actually put a limit upon the length of stay that will be covered. For example, an insurance company might only cover 30 days or the first 10 days and you will be required to pick up the rest of the bill.

Specific Services

Some insurance companies put limitations on the type of services that are covered. Your health insurance might only cover medical related expenses that you in receive while in rehab. This can include medications, doctor’s visits and blood work, but won’t include group counseling, food, the stay at the rehab center and other non-medical related expenses.

Technology moves faster than we may notice. We see technology take leaps and bounds so often that we may not notice when something great comes along. In the medical field, new technology is taken very seriously because efficiency and accuracy is so important to a patient’s health and health care professionals’ careers. One of the recent steps technology has taken has given life to a new, more efficient form of picture taking in the medical field that helps replace x-ray film.

The picture archiving and communication system (PACS) is the system in the medical field that stores digital images in a computer system as an alternative to x-rays. The reason PACS is so popular is that instead of x-ray film, patients’ photos are available on the hospital’s system, where almost any employee has access, making the use of photos more effective. The reports for the imaging study are also connected to the photo, which allows easy understanding of the photos. PACS allows results to be reported to the patients faster, and it is more efficient for the hospital employees.

The PACS system is much easier to use and more useful than previous technology. Replacing hard copies of images helps to create easier access for the doctors, and a faster way of tending to the patient because the pictures don’t take as long to process. PACS also helps in remote access, radiology workflow management, and electronic image integration platform.

PACS handles many different types of images. PACS can handle almost any picture, such as ultrasound photos, computed tomography, magnetic resonance, endoscopy, mammograms, positron emission tomography, and plenty of others.

On a few rare occassions, almost everyone takes the opportunity to overeat. Who doesn’t take an extra helping of seconds on Thanksgiving or enjoys a large piece of cake on their birthday? If the uncontrollable urge to overeat becomes a regularly patterned habit, you may a binge eating disorder sufferer.

Binge eating disorder can be characterized bythe act of compulsive overeating. The person consumes large quantities of food, feels powerless and out of control, but does not purge themselves of the food afterwards. They often feel guilty, disgusted, and depressed which leads them to beat themselves up for the lack of self-control.

The binge eater engages in conducts which are behavioral and emotional natural. These include:

Eating excessive amount of foods whether hungry or not

Eating until they feel sick or physically uncomfortable

Hiding eating habits due to embarrassment over how much is being consumed

Eating normally around others, but gorging behind closed doors

Keeping secret stashes of food to binge on later

Eating to numb the feelings of stress and tension

Expressing disgust at their weight, eating, and body appearance

Treatment and therapies for binge eating include:

Cognitive behavioral therapy

Interpersonal psychotherapy

Nutritional counseling and planning

Dialectical behavior therapy

Talk therapy

Appetite suppressants and anti-depressants can sometimes be prescribed

Alternative therapies including acupuncture, aromatherapy, homeopathy, meditation, and massage therapy

There are no exact causes for eating disorders such as binge eating, but researchers believe it has to do with genetics, hormones, and certain personality types. As more studies are completed, information about binge eating disorder along with treatment and prevention will be more readily available.

What started as a fun planned day with friends ended with Ann in the emergency room believing she was having a heart attack. As her husband started to list Ann’s symptoms including a raging heartbeat, chest pains, dizziness, trembling, and nausea the doctor listened intently. After a quick EKG, the diagnosis was not a heart attack but instead a panic attack.

Panic attacks have a tendency to reach maximum intensity within a few minutes once they begin and slowly diminish over the next 30 minutes or longer. It is not uncommon for a first time attack to cause a person to seek medical attention. Further attacks occur several times a month and are just as severe as the initial attack.

Women make up three fourths of all panic disorder patients. The disorder often begins when a person is between the ages of 20-30 and is less often to occur in teenagers or those over the age of forty. It is uncommon for panic disorder to afflict the elderly. It is uncommon for panic disorder to afflict the elderly.

Additional symptoms of a panic attack include:

Difficulty breathing

Terror

Feeling of dread

Lightheadedness

Choking

Intense fear, anxiousness, and fright

Hot flashes or sudden chills

Tingling feeling in toes and fingers

Trembling, shaking, and sweating

Fear of going crazy or about to die

The treatment for panic disorder is a combination of:

Cognitive behavioral therapy – sessions geared towards cognitive modeling with desensitization and behavioral retraining

Medication – to prevent or reduce severity and frequency of attacks along with medication to reduce anxiety and depression

Psychodynamic therapy – talk therapy

There are times when we all have our ups and down, but for a person suffering from bipolar disorder, those up and down times are more severe. Bipolar disorder if left untreated can hurt a person’s work and school performance, damage relationships, and disrupt daily life.

Bipolar disorder is also known as manic depression. It causes serious shifts in behavior, mood, thinking and energy. During an episode, a person can suffer from the highs of mania to the lows of severe depression. The cycles of the disorder last for days, weeks, and sometimes months with such intensity that it interferes with the person’s ability to function.

The causes of the disorder are not completely understood, but have been found to run in families. The first episode usually occurs in early adulthood with system that are subtle and confusion, which often leads to a misdiagnosis.

Bipolar disorder has three different faces:

Bipolar I Disorder – the person experiences at least one manic or mixed episode

Bipolar II Disorder – the person experiences episodes of hypomania and severe depression

Cyclothymia – the person experiences episodes of hypomania and mild depression or cyclical mood swings

Bipolar disorder requires treatment and will not go away by ignoring the problem. In fact, left untreated the individual will get worse causing problems in everything from relationships to careers to mental and physical health.

Psychological and external environment are contributors in the development of the disorder. Certain triggers can set off an episode or make existing symptoms worse. These triggers include:

Substance abuse

Stress

Changes in season

Medication

Deprivation of sleep

The basic treatment for bipolar disorder includes:

A long term treatment program due to chronic relapses

Prescribed medication but the focus is on therapy, lifestyle changes, and social support

Working with an experienced psychiatrist for monitoring and helping to navigate the patient through his up and down periods

Hoarding has become a more commonly diagnosed mental health disorder over the past few years. The onset of the disorder typically occurs during late adolescents, but can occur later in life after a traumatic event, episode of depression, or brain damage.

Compulsive hoarding is classified as a disorder characterized by a person finding it difficult to discard items that appear to other people as having little or no value. The disorder causes the individual to accumulate clutter which makes it impossible to using living and work spaces as they were intended.

As a result, the clutter becomes a serious threat to the individual’s health and safety along with anyone who lives nearby. This is due to the fact that the hoarder has acquired too many items for them to eventually use or consume.

Why does a person become a compulsive hoarder? They are:

Afraid to lose important information

Scared of forgetting the loved one that gave them the item

Avoiding making a decision about an item

Afraid to discard items that might be useful or needed some day

Afraid of being wasteful

Unable to find a way to organize objects so they can be found later

A person is diagnosed with compulsive hoarding when they experience significant distress and/or impairment in function as a result of hoarding behaviors. Common functional impairments include:

Infestations

Fire and health hazards due to excessive clutter

Inability to prepare meals or bath in the home

Inability to have guest in the home

Conflicts with family or friends due to the clutter

Compulsive hoarding disorder requires a treatment plan. This includes:

Cognitive behavior therapy to alter the person’s thinking and gradually dismantle the behavior to come to a solution to the problem

Medication for the treatment of OCD

Medication for the treatment of depression and anxiety are sometimes included in the program

It is normal to double check that you have unplugged the iron, turned off the stove, or locked your car. However, a person with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) experiences compulsive behaviors brought on by obsessive thoughts that interfere with functioning properly in daily life.

OCD is defined as an anxiety disorder characterized by unwanted, uncontrollable, and repetitive thoughts causing ritualized behaviors that the sufferer is compelled to perform. The OCD patient often recognizes the thoughts and behaviors as irrational, but are unable to resist and control them.

The obsessive part of the disorder causes disturbing and distracting thoughts that are impulsive and involuntary. The sufferer often develops obsessive thoughts including fear of being contaminated by dirt and germs, fear of causing harm to self or others, and superstitions.

The compulsive part of the disorder causes behaviors or rituals that must be acted out over and over to the point of causing anxiety as the urge becomes more demanding. The sufferer develops the compulsion to excessively double check things, check the safety of loved ones, hoarding, and repeatedly clean things.

OCD sufferers fall into one or more of the following categories including:

Checkers – have the compulsion to check things over and over that they consider to be harmful or dangerous such as the oven, iron, or unlocked doors

Washers – afraid of contamination and have cleaning or hand-washing rituals

Doubters – afraid that if something is not done perfectly something bad will happen or they will be punished

Hoarders – fear that if anything is thrown away something bad will happen causing them to hoard items they do not use or need

Counters and arrangers – have an obsession with order and symmetry which often manifests in superstitions about particular colors, arrangements, or numbers

There are many effective treatments for OCD sufferers including:

Cognitive therapy

Behavioral therapy

Medication for anxiety and depression

Family therapy

Group therapy and support

PTSD (posttraumatic stress disorder) is characterized as an emotional illness caused by one or more occurrences of frightening, life-threatening, and highly unsafe experiences. It is classified as an anxiety disorder and had been first formally discovered and diagnosed in war veterans and soldiers.

More recently PTSD has been diagnosed in cases of patients involving sexual abuse, incest, and rape, catastrophic events such as plane crashes and automobile accidents, and even traumatic experiences such as home invasions, divorce, or the sudden death of a loved one.

PTSD can occur directly after a major trauma or be delayed for many months after the event. Patients that experience PTSD soon after the initial trauma are able to improve within a few months. Those that experience a delayed reaction can be faced with a longer-term form of PTSD lasting for many years.

The prevalent groups of symptoms assigned to a PTSD diagnosis include:

Re-experiencing the trauma on a recurrent basis including flashbacks, nightmares, and disturbing memories

Avoiding people, places, and certain experiences that remind the sufferer of the trauma to the point of developing a phobia

Developing chronic physical signs of hypersensitivity including having problems sleeping, poor concentration or trouble concentrating, experiencing blackouts and unable to remember things, and an increase in reaction and tendency for being startled or constant state of fear

A diagnosis of PTDS can be challenging for medical professionals as often time the sufferer comes in for an evaluation of something that appears to be unrelated. PTSD symptoms often manifest themselves physically with body aches and depression or a hidden by substance abuse.

If left untreated, PTSD can have devastating impacts on the sufferer’s emotional state, mental and physical functioning and well-being, and relationships with family.

There are treatment plans for PTSD which includes:

Psychological treatment including psychotherapy

Serotonergic antidepressants (SSRIs) to relieve and treat anxiety or depression

Mood stabilizers and antipsychotics to manage PTSD symptoms

Sleep analysis to directly address sleep issues associated with PTSD

Relaxation techniques and massage therapy

Support groups to assist with learning about the illness, creating a support system, and discovering positive lifestyle practices.

There is no one best way to treat alcohol addition. This is why some people end up in rehab more than once before they finally conquer their addictions and learn to live without alcohol. The various methods each offer a different approach, and there is no solution that works for everyone.

The most successful methods involve teaching the patient how to handle situations that cause him or her to want to drink. The “12-step” methods have been around for years, partly because they do work for many people, but also because they were one of the first formal methods used to address problem drinking. Since modern research has found more information as to what causes alcoholism, there have been developments in more contemporary and shorter-term therapies. One element they all have in common is that they teach patients how to make responsible choices and how to deal with situations in which alcohol is present.

Controversial treatments include various drugs to supplement addiction therapy. Some of these medications work by reducing the desire for alcohol. Others work by making a person physically ill whenever they consume alcohol, thus preventing them from drinking any substantial amounts. The illness is such a strong deterrent that eventually the patient learns to live without alcohol. There is also an implant version of this drug that prevents the patient from skipping doses. It is not yet available in the United States.

Another highly medication, Naltrexone, is taken before drinking alcohol. It supposedly works by eliminating the pleasurable sensations that alcohol provides. Most alcohol treatment professionals do not recommend drugs such as this because it does not address the underlying causes of alcoholism, and therefore has a very poor success rate.

Until recently, patients suffering from mental health issues found that insurance coverage for these conditions was different from that of medical issues. Often, the deductibles and co-pays for mental health medications and office visits was structured differently from other prescriptions or consultations. In addition, health insurance did not provide the same coverage for residential treatment, or it limited the number of therapy sessions. Essentially, mental health issues have been given a different set of standards, making it much more expensive for patients.

The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Treatment Act of 2010, otherwise known as the “parity law”, is an effort to provide equal insurance benefits for both mental and physical health issues. Under this law, co-pays, deductibles and number of visits to care providers must be the same for both physical and mental health.

While this law extends mental health coverage to many patients, making it much more affordable, it does not guarantee coverage. For example, it does not require health insurance to cover mental health conditions at all. Nor does it apply to companies with less than 50 employees or individual insurance plans. However, for those whose insurance does offer mental health benefits, it means that out-of-pocket costs will be limited. Insurance plans are still free to decide which, if any, mental health conditions they will not cover.

While the parity law does not benefit every mental health patient, it still represents a significant milestone in changing societal views about mental health conditions. Hopefully, it will begin to reduce the outdated prejudices and stereotypes regarding mental health, and help make treatments available to all patients who need them.

Choosing a rehab center isn’t something that should be done rashly or without a lot of thought. Dealing with an addiction takes time, and the odds of success depend a great deal on the type of treatment offered. The most important factor is to choose a facility that utilizes principles you agree with and that you can relate to.

Some rehab centers are faith-oriented or incorporate certain spiritual beliefs. For people who are searching spiritually, these can either be helpful, or they can be very alienating. Always try to examine the core principles that the center uses in treatment to see if they fit with your own. If they don’t, they can serve as a distraction and can interfere with the treatment process.

Location and physical characteristics are important as well. The center may have a wonderful reputation, but if the patient feels uncomfortable in the surroundings, this may generate ambivalence. Other facilities may seem too luxurious, which can give the impression that they re more concerned with appearances than with patient interaction.

Of course, cost is always an important factor. For patients that are paying for treatment out-of-pocket, the most prestigious treatment centers may be out of reach. Health insurance may not cover the total cost of treatment, so it’s important to search for facilities that are well within the family’s budget.

Remember that cost is not always the best indicator of quality. There are many addition treatment centers that provide effective treatment and follow-up services at affordable rates. Physicians can usually recommend treatment centers in a variety of price ranges that are appropriate for their patients’ individual needs.

In this world, a lot of people are under the impression that they can only become addicted to drugs and alcohol. But in truth, a person can become addicted to just about anything. While you might think that there is a limit to the number of addictions that a person could theoretically take on, there really is no such limit. Only the imagination of the individual addict can possibly begin to work on the number of different things that a person could become addicted to. If you would like a good list of all of the different things that a person can become addicted to, your best bet is going to be reading the entire dictionary. After all, literally any sort of activity or object can become addictive, because the patterns of addiction can work with just about anything.

An addiction will typically start out with an incredibly good feeling about whatever it is that you are doing. At this point, you can hardly imagine how you ever got through life without this great rush of raw, beautiful emotions. Of course, after that initially great feeling, you are never going to get up to that same level again, no matter what you do. It is a little bit like inflation, where it wears away a very small amount per time, and just continues to do so. While the initial loss of greatness in your enjoyment of whatever it is may only be a little bit, over time it will start to become noticeable.

At about the point of noticeable loss of awesomeness (which should be a medical term), you enter a state of dependence. Now, you can be dependent on cocaine, or on gambling, or even on shopping online for random “stuff.” While the level of harmfulness of an addiction may vary somewhat (since nobody ever likely died from shopping online), the overall effect can still be dangerous to your overall life. After all, what you do decides where you get to. And if you are putting more and more of your energy into your vice of choice, you’ll suffer.

A person can often not tell if their mind is beginning to slip. And while a psychological professional would never seriously use the term “crazy,” a lot of times they can recognize when a mental illness is present in a patient who may not realize it within themselves. After all, sometimes a person’s basis in reality is not as secure as they would like to believe that it is. And without a firm basis in reality, a person will very often have symptoms that would be obvious to many people, but that completely pass them by. Unfortunately, it can easily become a case of denial, as the person goes deeper and deeper into some sort of neurosis that separates them further and further from the basically consensus reality that most of us inhabit. So how can you tell if you are personally crazy, when there is really no objective method that anyone could ever use to be certain?

First of all, if you are seriously questioning your sanity, you probably still have a significant percentage of it remaining. After all, as long as you have some kind of a solid core of mental health grounding you to an idea of what reality is, you are probably not slipping very far away from that without some kind of a mental alarm going off for you. The key to sanity is being grounded in something which approaches the consensus reality that most people agree upon. While there is no such thing as a purely objective reality, in order to function we have to have a consensus in any group of people.

Of course, if you truly believe that you could not be more sane, and that it is everybody else who is crazy, that might be the time to start being a little concerned. While it is fine to have a strong personal reality, and to believe that you are right (other than potentially become arrogant from it), it goes too far when you become convinced that your own sanity is completely unassailable. You have always got to be open to variations.

When you are addicted to something, it can seem as though the only thing that could ever make you feel good is to indulge in your vice of choice. But you are most likely well aware by this point that your vice is slowly killing you, and that it is harming your health, wealth and the important relationships on the way to prematurely ending your life. This is why you are (hopefully) working to avoid your vice, and live a life that is clean of it. In order to properly beat your addiction, you have got to take care of yourself better than your drug of choice can. And while it might seem as though that is mission impossible, you have got a lot of different options at your disposal besides using. You can take care of yourself in a very wide variety of different ways.

For one thing, you can find alternative (legal, reasonably safe) methods of having a good time that do not in any way involve using any kind of drugs or booze. After all, there are tons of different ways to have a good time, and some are even pretty thrilling. Ever ride a dirt bike on a mountain trail? Ever go sky diving? These are a whole lot more safe than drugs are, and they are also perfectly legal and pretty exciting to do. The idea is to get into something that gives you the same kind of high that you used to get out of your drug of choice, only through a genuine experience instead of through using.

After all, drugs are just bogus excuses for feelings and experiences. When you use, you are cheapening the real experiences of life through pretending that you are having one, when all you are really doing is manipulating yourself. In reality, drugs are not just bad because they physically hurt you and because they get you in trouble with the law. The biggest reason why drugs are a bad idea is because they cheapen the entire experience of a person’s life. Go out and live for real.

Dealing with drug addiction is certainly not easy to face. Drug problems often interfere with a person’s quality of living, how they handle (or don’t handle) daily situations, and even how they interact with their families. When things begin to get out of control, it may be time to escalate resolving the situation by being admitted to a detox facility to remedy the problems.

There are specialized drug and addiction centers that focus intently on helping people deal with substance abuse issues. The programs often have trained counselors and medical personnel who know how to help those that suffer with addiction issues. The program may introduce behavior modification steps, psychological counseling, or alternative medications to assist the person in a full detoxification process. All of this will vary according to te facility, as will the length of the program and the cost.

The Effects of Drugs

Drug addictions can often show subtle signs before there becomes an obvious problem to address. How will you know when it’s time to go to rehab? Basically, when your life or your loved one’s life is substantially affected from dealing with a drug addiction. If they don’t want to go to work, they won’t take care of their physical grooming needs, their financial situation is impacted (lack of cash, late paying bills), or there is a noticeable change in how they interact with their families (usually more aggressive, despondent, etc.), it may be time to consider detox.

By getting good, solid information about addiction from a treatment center, reading it yourself or sharing it with your loved one, you can help convince them that it’s the right thing to do. If you suffer with this, understand that your family suffers as well. Professional, timely help is the most effective way to deal with a drug addiction crisis and restore the quality of living that you prefer.

It is an unfortunate part of our society that it is exceedingly rare for any person to be “cured” of any kind of mental illness. What happens far more frequently in our world is that a person’s condition is merely treated for the duration of the individual’s life. While one could easily argue some sort of conspiracy theory, and claim that the mentally ill population of our culture are merely the assets of the pharmaceutical companies who ostensibly serve them, this is not about supposed conspiracies. This is about getting over a mental illness. While it is always tempting to simply believe that you can “act normal” and be just fine, this is almost never the case.

After all, the treatment of a mental illness is not a matter of theatrics. Very often, there is a serious chemical problem going on in a person’s brain, and there is no “acting” your way out of something like that. You have to live with it, work around it when you can, and treat it through medicines when your workarounds are not enough. As great as it would be for our species to finally be able to cure mental illnesses (even relatively minor ones), we might be generations away from being able to do something like that.

The active point to remember is that there is no cure for a mental illness, and expecting someone to just “get better” is both unrealistic and cruel. What you can do is help them to work around their problems, just as we all do. There are no perfect people, after all. And until you are completely devoid of problems (which is a state that will never happen), criticizing other people for their problems is pretty ridiculous. While we can fix the external problems that mental illness can produce, through helping one another, there is no cure for what is wrong inside.

When you have got a serious addiction, the natural thing to do is to seek treatment for it, and overcome it through avoiding your vice. And the best way you can ever do this is through going to a rehab facility and getting treated that way. Unfortunately, there are a lot of occasions in which a small problem develops with this, in that sometimes your insurance company will refuse to pay for rehab. After all, medical necessity is a relative term, and it is always ultimately up to the insurance company itself to make those kinds of decisions. Fortunately, you have got a lot of different options at your disposal, in order to ensure that your treatment is adequate.

Your first option is to attempt to negotiate to pay cash, through some sort of a payment plan. Rehab facilities are just like all other types of businesses, in that they need cash in order to continue to function. While insurance companies are very reliable once they agree to pay, people are usually a lot faster in remitting the payment itself. So a lot of times, you can actually negotiate down to the Medicare rate (which is typically a lot lower than what the official bill would have been, had you simply offered to pay whatever the facility wanted).

Another option that is always at your disposal is not one that you want to take lightly, but it is theoretically possible. You can have someone you trust go through your home, remove all of your drugs and related objects (and be honest about where they all are), then allow you to suffer through your withdrawal symptoms at home where it is reasonably inexpensive. While there is obviously going to be a major temptation to fall back into your old using patterns when you are at home, you will also be able to focus on getting better.

Far too often, when an addicted individual goes into a rehab center, they are just going through a set of motions which someone else has prescribed for them. In far too many cases, this is all very superficial, and lends itself only to being a joke that they endure for a little while in between significant binges. If a person does not really want to get better, they are not going to get any better. They are simply going to continue onward with the trends which got them to where they are, and take those roads to their inevitable conclusions. Of course, those are typically some pretty horrible conclusions, but often the addict does not really care about that.

After all, what possible reason would a person who typically spends all of their time enjoying the moment have for thinking about what “might” happen in their lives in some distant, unspecified point in the future? To many addicts, the entire notion of rehab is just ridiculous, and ends up being little more than a bump in the road on their path of addictive “bliss.” While they might be focusing on having a good time now, this will ultimately end up harming them after awhile. So they might want to consider focusing on actually getting better, instead.

If you have a problem with an addiction, you can go to rehab and slog your way through it, just working to get to the end of it and go home to your wonderful fix. Or you can focus on getting better, so that you can live a real life that is not dependent on some kind of nonsensical chemical dependency. While the first few months are going to be both a physical and psychological hell, as you readjust to the “real” world, it does get a lot better after awhile. There are some really good, completely real things.

For far too many people who are addicted to something or other, their entire life has been focused on living in the moment. While this can be a very seductive, fun way to live, where nothing bothers you for very long, it is also a bad way to make anything substantially good happen in your life. After all, the best things in life take some time to build up, no matter how quickly they can be torn down. And the tearing down process, while often apparently instantaneous, may have taken a very long time to actually set in motion and go through its process. Sometimes, you can begin to understand the future, through moving slowly out of just this moment.

For instance, there are going to be some times when you just do not want to continue onward with anything in life. If this is the case, you might not set a goal that is all the way in next year, or even next week. In some cases, your best goals might involve making it through an hour or two long ordeal. Sometimes soldiers speak of their more rigorous training programs, and having to slug it out through everything their drill instructors throw at them. Sometimes just making it to the next meal is all the goal they can handle.

And this is perfectly all right. If you have spent your entire life never thinking more than an hour or so ahead of where you are this second, you have undoubtedly got a long way to go before you can get into building a five year plan. First, start out with things that you can do today that will probably help you to get a better life together in the future. Plan out what you want to do tomorrow before you go to bed tonight. Over time, push your goals out a little bit further.
